Create clever artwork with the Triple Mat Stencil technique. This is a reimagining of a classic stamping technique. Lisa and I were inspired by our friend Linda at Valley Stamp and Scrap who shared this stencil version during a recent Facebook Live presentation.
Make the Card
To make a triple mat card, traditionally you'd trim light-colored paper into three panels:
- Small - 2 x 3-1/4"
- Medium - 2-3/4 x 4"
- Large - 3-1/2 x 4-3/4"
Depending on how you create the panels, you may end up with quite a few scraps. However, Tricia recently developed a much more efficient method, and our new Triple Mat Card Making Formula was born!
Regardless of how you choose to make the panels, follow the steps below to complete the card.
Triple Mat Technique with Stencils
Gather your favorite stencil(s), assorted Hybrid Inks, and a variety of panels in coordinating colors.
Place a small amount of temporary adhesive on the back side of both the small and medium panels.
Stack the three panels together. Ensure proper alignment with a grid ruler.
Place the stencil on the work surface (Let It Bee 07.21). Lay the stacked panels face down, with the smallest panel touching the stencil. Secure the panels in place with low tack tape.
Flip the stencil over and begin applying the lightest shade of ink using an Ink Applicator Brush. (Here I'm using Club Scrap's Hybrid Yellow.)
Blend Tangerine ink into select areas. Finally, fill in the remaining spaces with Earth Ink.
Remove the stencil. Carefully take the panels apart.
If not using the Triple Mat Card Formula, trim additional Let It Bee papers to the following sizes:
Dark Yellow - 2-1/8 x 3-3/8"
Gold - 2-7/8 x 4 1/8"
Brown - 3-3/4 x 5"
Dry fit the panels and mats according to size.
Adhere the smallest Ivory panel to the Dark Yellow mat. Repeat with each panel and mat pair until all of them are adhered, creating the illusion that the stencil image is unbroken.
Complete the card with embellishments and stamps.
