During the Fresh Picked spoiler earlier this week, Tricia introduced the updated version of the 5x7 U-Hinge Book Online Class, and by now you've (hopefully) enjoyed a visual tour of Emily's finished book.
After filming the video tutorial with the Fresh Picked Page Kit, Tricia discovered clever ways to incorporate many of the leftover papers from "Pocket D" into the project. With a few extra cuts, you can really maximize the interactive nature of the book AND potentially add even more photos. than the original version.
U-Hinge Book—Extended Edition
Whether you're utilizing a monthly Page Kit or a special release, you should have the leftover papers listed below after all of the trimming is complete, and the book structure is assembled:
- (6) 5x12 Plains—(2) Paper B, (2) Paper C, (2) Paper D
- (4) 4.75x5.75 Prints—Papers E and F
- 4.75x5.75 Plain—Paper A
If you're using a special release collection like the Fresh Picked Page Kit, it includes four 12x12 papers in lieu of a dozen pre-cut photo mats.
If you haven't already used the bonus sketch to trim all of them into 4.25x6.25" photo mats, Tricia has some tricks up her sleeve* for those as well!
Bonus Trimming Instructions—5x12 Plains
Create a fly-out panel for the center of each trifold.
- Trim each 5x12 vertically at 4.75".
- Score each 4.75x12 at 6.75".
Apply adhesive to the back of the 4.75x6.75 portion of the scored piece and position in the center of each open trifold page with the flap on the right side.
Five 4.75x5.75 Printed Panels
You will have a total of five 4.75x5.75" panels (four prints, one plain). Crop each to 4.5x5". This size will fit the flap of each fly-out panel.

Note: Border strip cutaparts trimmed at 4.75" are perfect for filling the bare space to the left of the flap when closed. Punch plain paper or cutapart artwork with a 1-inch circle punch to create a "pull tab" for the flap.
Special Release Bonus Papers*
The 5x7 U-Hinge Book Online Class includes a bonus sketch for special release kits. The trimming diagram transforms the four 12x12" papers into a dozen 4.25x6.25" photo mats.
However, if you follow the sketch with only two sheets of paper, you'll make six photo mats, one to attach to the inside bottom flap of each page. (Shown in yellow below.)
Next, cut one sheet at 6". Rotate and trim each 6x12 at 8 and 4" to create a set of six 4x6" mats. Nest the mats onto the 4.25x6.25" pieces, on the outside of the bottom flap, as shown below in Dk. Green.
Finally, trim the fourth 12x12 sheet into four 4.5x5" panels to cover additional "wings" on the fly-out pages.
