Welcome! Fall is going to be here before we know it. What better way to document the season than by making a handmade 5x7 U-Hinge Book with our latest collection: Fresh Picked!
The fall season holds many opportunities to make memories: time with family, visiting the apple orchard and pumpkin patch, seeing the fall leaves on the trees, enjoying the air getting crisper, the tasty fall treats and drinks, and so much more! Allow this project to inspire you to create and document this next season.
Fresh Picked 5x7 U-Hinge Book
The 5x7 U-Hinge Book such a great size to work with and will fit perfectly on any shelf, ready to be admired for years to come. The foldouts allow for ample room to add decor and photos. I enjoy how this size allows you to keep many full 6x4 photos, in addition to cropped images.
Materials and Supplies

- 12” Paper Trimmer*
- 3x14" Grid Ruler
- Scor Pal 1/8s
- Accordion Pocket File Starter Kit (or Premade!)
- Bone Folder
- Foam Brush
- Adhesive (My preference! Use what you like 😊)
- Scissors

Embellishment
Below is what I personally used to "gild the lily" on this project. Of course, you can always use whatever you want to make it your own, which I encourage!
Paper Assignments
Please note that for this project I followed a previous version of the instructions. Paper assignments may not end up exactly as shown in my example. For the end result, I wanted each page to be a different color to achieve a gradient look, so I modified the paper assignments for B, C, and D accordingly. In my example I had two inside pages of Dark Green whereas the assignments below result with two in Light Green. Because this kit is a Special Release you have extra paper to play with, so have fun and experiment with it! :)
- Paper A: (2) Dark Green
- Paper B, C, D - Inside Pages: 1 sheet of Dark Green, Red, Orange, Yellow, and (2) Light Green
- Paper E: Apple Print
- Paper F: Pumpkin Print
- (4) Sheets for photo mats: Yellow, Light Green, Orange, Red
Assembly & Decor
Follow along with Tricia in the workshop video and written instructions to construct the base of your 5x7 U-Hinge Book. This is another project that utilizes the clever U-hinge structure which allows for so much customization!
Cover Details
I adore the inverted rounded corners featured in this collections cutaparts. I used the 1" circle punch to follow the curve of the cutapart. It took some practice lining it up as the edge is hidden under the punch, but I got the hang of it! I distressed the edge of the cutapart with an Ink Applicator and Club Scrap's Earth Ink and tied it all together with a leaf charm. I would recommend trying foam adhesive dots for this, which is something I will do next time!
Inside Pages
I used the same Earth Ink and Ink Applicator Brush to brush the ink into the woodcut following the woodgrain. I did layers until I got the outcome I was looking for and emphasized the edges to make them a little darker. I also distressed the fussy cut cutaparts before adhering them. 
I used the same techniques with the pumpkin woodcuts as well, finishing them off with some jute. I used the 1" Circle Punch to punch out the circle cutaparts perfectly!
The Mini Stapler is such a fun way to add ribbon to the cutaparts! I absolutely adore the red gingham ribbon. Reminds me of a picnic!
I often added in paper banners to tie into the swallows tails on the ribbon and the woodcut. It's a nice easy way to anchor the cutaparts. I also love the swirl I did on the pumpkin to look more like a pumpkin stem!
I love all of the colors in this collection! Each page is 7"x5', and each third page opens up to 12" or more depending on how you decorate it.
For the leaf tags I distressed them with the Earth Ink like I did the fussy cut cutaparts. I enjoy the subtle dimension it adds!

Thank you for flipping - or rather, scrolling - through the completed pages of my 5x7 U-Hinge Book featuring the Fresh Picked collection! The fun, vibrant colors were a joy to work with. I enjoy the gradient of the pages as well, and was fun to think about the order I wanted the pages to be.
I am always astounded with just how much you can fit in these pages! I was able to get 27 photo spots in this album. I hope you enjoy making your 5x7 U-Hinge Book this fall!
