Create a U-Hinge Book with the Pack of Panels from the Coming Up Roses collection.
I love this bookbinding technique! I wanted to try using POPs (Pack of Panels) to make a brag book for my daughter Shannon. We celebrated her 20th Birthday with a day trip to NYC to see Hadestown on Broadway. The album holds an incredible eighteen 4x6" photos!
Pack of Panels U-Hinge Book tutorial
Gather the following to recreate this book.
- (2) 4-1/4x6-1/4" mat board covers
- (2) 1-3/4x4-1/4" mat board spine
- Lt. Brown outside spine cover
- Lt. Brown inside spine cover
- (4) 1x4" Lt. Brown, scored vertically at 3/8 and 5/8"
- (2) each of Red and Orange POPs (to wrap inside and outside covers)
- (8) 4x6" Dk. Brown inside pages
Wrap the mat boards with Lt. Brown, Orange and Red panels, using the U-Hinge Book Instructions as your guide.
Mitre the corners with a grid ruler and scissors.
Adhere the long sides first making sure to tuck and wrap the papers around the corners.
Trim each of the inside covers to fit over the exposed mat board.
Spread Bookbinding Glue onto the panels; adhere to the inside of the covers and spine.
Fold the four 1x4" Lt. Brown along the score lines, with the bump of the score line inside the fold.
Adhere the four u-hinges to the spine with glue dispensed from a Needle-tipped applicator.
Add glue to the front of the flap of the u-hinge (closest to the back of the book) with a Needle-tipped Applicator.
Place a Dk. Brown inside page onto the glued area next to the score line, aligning with the top and bottom edges of the hinge.
Repeat these steps to adhere the remaining pages to each flap.
Center a Dk. Brown panel onto the front cover.
Dazzle Roses Embellishments
Did you know you can utilize the "negatives" left over after using your Dazzles stickers? Once all of the intricate roses are removed from the carrier sheet, place pieces of clear tape over the chosen "negative" and burnish to ensure proper adhesion.
Carefully remove the tape to lift the sticker pieces away from the carrier sheet.
Place the tape onto a Red panel.
Burnish each section of the image with a bone folder as you gently peel the tape away from the paper.
Fussy cut the roses with scissors for use as embellishments on the front cover of the book.
Scan the playbill, adjust the size and print on Ivory Super Smooth paper. Nest Lt. Brown and Ivory strips, and center them onto the Dk. Brown cover panel. Adhere three roses and the mini playbill with Bookbinding Glue. Let's a look at the finished project.
Crop 4x6 photos to fit by trimming 1/4" from one short and one long side of each picture; nest onto the Dk. Brown inside pages.
Don't be afraid to orient your photos both horizontally and vertically within the book!
