Last night, Tricia taught a LIVE workshop where folks learned to make an adorable Gnome for Christmas Maze Book in a Box. As with most of our workshops, once the initial project is complete, it's easy to repurpose the instructions to make additional variations.

Maze Book in a Box Project Kit

Each kit contains the supplies needed to make a Maze Book with an adorable storage box, including instructions and a helpful video. Pick one up while supplies last - quantities are limited!

After class, it's easy to re-use the instructions to create more projects with papers and stamps (or cutaparts) from your stash.

Maze Book Ornament

While I loved the sweet little storage box "as is", I wanted to somehow transform the maze book into a keepsake ornament for our tree. I envision adding holiday family photos each year until it's full - what fun it will be to look back and reminisce during annual holiday decorating.

So what's a girl to do? Design a hanging slipcase as alternative storage for the maze book, of course!

To construct a maze book, box and slipcase, gather the following supplies:

Instructions (from the Maze Book in a Box Project kit)
(5) 12x12 Plain Papers (from your stash)
(1) Light-colored 12x12 Plain for stamping
Gnome for Christmas stamps
Typeset 3x12 Sentiment Strip

Book and Box Trimming and Assembly

To replicate my project, utilize the following paper assignments: (2) Ivory Plain (Paper A and Cutapart sub), Kraft (Paper B), (2) Red (Paper C and Slipcase), and Brown (Paper D).

Trim Papers A-D as outlined in the project instructions. Assemble the maze book and box.

If using stamps to decorate your project, trim a light-colored 12x12 Plain (Ivory) following the cutting diagram for the Cutpapart (Step 5).

Stamp the sentiment (Gnome for Christmas stamps) with Earth ink onto a Kraft Panel. Add faux berries with red marker. Mat and add to the front cover of the maze book.

Inside, stamp several 2.5x3.5" Ivory panels with art and/or sentiments. Adhere to select inside pages, leaving plenty of panels "blank" for matting photos.

Stamp more Ivory panels to create a cover and liners for your box. If you'll be turning your maze book into an "ornament", the box can be set aside to "wrap" a small holiday gift.

Making the Slipcase

One 12x12 will produce two slipcases. Follow the trimming and assembly steps below:

1. Trim one 12x12 (Red Plain) at 6". Cut each 6x12 at 9.25". Score each 6x9.5 horizontally at 1, 4.25, 5.25, and 8.5". Rotate the paper and score at 1 and 5.25".

2. Add darts and remove one corner of each slipcase as shown in the diagram.

3. Fold over the 3/4” flap to “bury the bump” of the score line, and glue the flap into place.

4. Fold along all remaining score lines. Apply glue to the 1" scored area of a side wall and fold onto the opposite 1" side wall to form a double thickness. Tuck in one base flap and both tabs. Apply glue to the outer scored area of the second flap and adhere over the tabs to form an open box shape.

5. Punch a 3/8" hole about 1/4" from the top edge of both narrow side walls. Thread a single length of ribbon through the holes, knotting each end.

I had enough panels left over from the construction of the maze book and box to decorate the slipcase as well. (Trim additional leftover scraps as needed.) The maze book slides easily in and out of the sllpcase to create a sweet ornament for your tree.

Don't forget to decorate the back side, too!

The Maze Book in a Box project is so much fun to make. Create a slipcase to transform the book into a keepsake ornament for yourself, or as a gift.
