Need a last minute gift idea? Explosion boxes come together quickly and make a unique, interactive gift. I paired the Watercolor Christmas collection and a festive die cut poinsettia tea light to make this beautiful box.
I found the original inspiration for this idea on Pinterest.
Explosion Box
Score a 12x12" Watercolor Christmas White Plain at 4 and 8". Rotate 90° and score again at 4 and 8".
Remove the four 4" corner squares with scissors.
Cut four 3.75" Watercolor Christmas Green squares and attach to the outsides of the box.
Flip the base over and trim four 3.75" Watercolor Christmas Poinsettia print squares. Attach to the insides of the box.
Cut a 3.5" Poinsettia Print square and layer with 3.75" Black Plain square. Attach to the bottom inside of the box. Add a small greeting (Holiday 2010) stamped on White Plain paper with India Ink.
Score a 6-1/8" square Watercolor Christmas Green plain at 1" on all sides.
Cut along the score line up to the first score on opposite sides of the paper as show in the photo below.
Embellish the top of the box lid with nested 4" square White Plain, 3.5" square Red Plain (photo mat) and 2.75" square Black Plain. Attach a poinsettia flower (Prima) with a gold brad to a 2.5" square Cardinal cutapart. Layer onto Black Plain.
Add Bookbinding Glue to the four tabs and attach to form the lid.
Give the box a test run to ensure everything fits together nicely.
Cut a 14" length of plaid ribbon and adhere to the outside lid rim (I used ATG adhesive). Tie a bow with an 8" piece of the same ribbon and attach to the rim using Glue Dots.
Die cut (Sizzix Movers and Shapers Poinsettia) four poinsettias using Red Plain (photo mat). Add a Gold Flower Dazzle (Love Blooms) to the center of each die cut. Attach to the outside panels of the box.
Poinsettia Flower Tea Light
Diecut leaf shapes from red paper with a Sizzix Decorative Strip die.
Punch a 1" circle of Red paper and punch a hole in the center.
Attach the leaves to the punched circle with hot glue.
Add Distress Stickles to the center of the flower and allow to dry completely.
Insert the flame of the tea light into the center of the flower and embellish the bottom with plaid ribbon.
The Explosion box is complete and ready for gift giving.
Happy Holiday Crafting!
