Create gorgeous texture and dramatic designs with the Tooled Leather Technique. Lisa and I found a video tutorial on Facebook shared by long-time Club Scrap friend, Michael Strong, and his granddaughters. They made the process look so fun and easy! We couldn't wait to gather our supplies and get started.

Tooled Leather Tutorial

To get started, gather the following supplies:

  • Paper panels
  • Embossing Folders
  • Inks
  • Bookbinding Glue
  • Water
  • Disposable containers
  • Paint brush

Place two Impressed Brown panels into a water bath for several seconds.

Remove from the water, wring out some of the excess moisture, and carefully crumple the papers into a ball.

Open each paper ball and press it flat onto a paper towel with your hands. Place one panel into an embossing folder*.

Run the folder through an embossing machine*.

Open the folder to reveal the still-damp embossed panel. Dry the panel with a heat tool or set it aside to dry naturally. NOTE: It must be completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Once completely dry, flip the embossed panel to the de-bossed side, so the indented designs are facing up.

Highlight the raised surfaces on the panel by swiping an Earth Ink pad directly onto the paper.

The indented or de-bossed areas should remain free of ink.

I realized at this point that the Brown panels might be a bit too dark. I really wanted more contrast between the paper and the ink, so I repeated the steps above with a Toile Tan panel.

After the surface of the panel is fully inked, mix a quarter-sized drop of Bookbinding Glue with a 1/2 teaspoon of water in a small disposable cup.

Brush the mixture over the panel with a paint brush.

Stipple the glue mixture into the de-bossed areas with the tip of the brush.

Once the entire surface is covered in the glue/water mixture, set the panel aside to dry completely or use a heat tool to speed the process.

The result is paper that looks and feels just like tooled leather!

Tooled Leather Cards

Julie

Trim the faux leather panel to fit the card front. Add ribbon (Impressed Card Kit) and a stamped sentiment (Stained Glass) with Lagoon ink. Mat with Red and Nest onto an Aqua card panel.

Lisa

Create a tooled leather panel with Aqua paper and India ink. Die cut stars from coordinating paper and add a stamped sentiment (Impressed).

The tooled leather panel below is created with Toile Tan and Earth ink. Layer onto an Ivory card base with a brown panel. Die cut a scalloped circle and stamp the sentiment with Wine ink.
